Innovation is Key

author: Indy August 2, 2009

Well, I can't say its about time because it really is about time that someone said something about it. Yesterday, President Obama in his weekly address mentioned that in order for us to come out of this recession we must come up with ways in order to innovate our current lifestyle as well as daily processes of life. I wonder who mentioned the same exact thing several months ago...oh yeah it was me! (Click here for Dream It to Achieve It). Here is the weekly address:

The reason why the US and world has done so well the last century is the innovation and invention of such products that not only give us a better way of life but make money at the same time. In his weekly address, President Obama says, "Innovation has been essential to our prosperity in the past, and it will be essential to our prosperity in the future." As an optimist, I strongly hope that in the coming months something extraordinarily will happen in the best of ways to reshape our great country and the world.
"Even as we rescue this economy, we must work to rebuild it stronger than before...We've got to build a new foundation strong enough to withstand future economic storms and support lasting prosperity." (USA Today)
Being the news junkie that I am, I found an article in Popular Mechanics that may do exactly that. Scientists may have found a way to have a single disc shaped battery to be able to power our home for one day at a time. This invention would help the energy crisis on so many levels. It would cut down total energy use from resource based companies and also that would help to bring down our use of electricity! You figure you install a few of these cell-like batteries in your home in addition to solar panels and wa-la...you have an almost endless supply of energy using one cell a day for the time while the other re-charges. This would revolutionize the way homes are built and could possibly save the world as we know it. The battery would be able to hold approximately 20 kilowatt-hours...the same as powering a single home. Incredible! (External link)

I also found an article last week on white roof tiles and the impact that they would do for the world if everyone installed them. Posted in the New York Times, the white roof tops article had me wanting to install them on my house! Basically, the general idea goes back to essential science...black absorbs energy and white reflects it. These panels do just that and do a damn good job as well. During the summer months, if the temperature outside is 100 degrees outside, its most likely that the temperature inside the house is even higher. With the white tile panels, the temperature inside would only be 80 degrees. This could save families a ridiculous amount of money and the earth would be much much cooler. Like the energy-cell idea, this would cut down on electricity use. (External link)

Finally, its innovation and inventions like these that will shape our country and world for years to come. People need to wake up and those without jobs should be coming up with ideas that would help them get employed but also help the world. Although we won't see an economic recovery until 2011, hopefully we can see many new inventions in the next year and half.
