Creating True Relationships

author: Indy October 21, 2009

What does the word relationship mean to you? Does it make you think of a union between a man and a woman? Or do you go deeper still, the union between any two people? When I think about the word relationship, it is a place of finding common ground. You are relating to that person because you have found something in common. What happens when you don't have something in common with a person? You try to create certain aspects about that person in which you can relate to them...give them an extra "image" or persona to something they are not. This is when we get disappointed in them but is it really their fault? What exactly did they do wrong but be themselves?

Many, many of us do this every time we meet someone whether its for friendship or something more. We create personas for people that they meet in order to accept them into their lives but we never appreciate them for who they are. Always trying to mold people into your specific persona will end in failure. The failure of the relationship will ultimately lead to disappointment. So while you need to know exactly who you want in terms of your significant other, you can't have a one size fits all for people.

What you can do change the way that you look at how you approach people. Appreciate everyone regardless of if they fit into your style of friendship. Even if you can't relate to them on an initial level, we all have something where we can find common ground. We can always relate to someone because we are all human beings. Once we stop molding people into what we want and appreciate them for who they are is a change that will change the world! So next time you don't necessarily relate to someone, don't brush them off. Try harder, because there is always something that you can relate on. Diversity is the spice of life!
