Today, as I left for work there was a ridiculous amount of traffic. I immediately knew that there had to be an accident and based on how long I was in traffic for gave it away. By the time I was able to see the accident and mind you it wasn’t even on my side, it was pretty bad. There was a truck flipped over, taking up 2 out of 3 lanes and an Acura TL smashed up to the side of the rightmost railing. God be with whoever was in that Acura because I can tell you it was in bad shape. The question I was asking myself was not how could this have happened but rather why did this accident which happened on the opposite side of traffic cause such an immense delay? Why do we always slow down to see what has happened? It’s not like we’re going to stop and get out to help the person…
It is because of the human fascination with death and destruction. Of course we would never want it to happen to us but if it happens to others it’s like being able to look into the looking glass and see what is going on. You can see the hurt on their faces, the pain in the person’s eyes of losing a loved one. Is this what it means to feel? Are we trying to feel through others?
Over the last 20 years, teenagers and young adults have moved to “cutting” themselves in order to feel again. They can’t find happiness in their lives and in order to feel anything revert to causing pain to them. Why is it that it has to be either one or the other? If you can’t be happy then the only other way to feel human is to create pain for yourself? I simply cannot agree with that or condone anyone who creates this kind of pain for themselves.
The irony in the fact that people all over the world are dying but we don’t see it, we don’t hear it, we don’t feel it. We see pictures of such things and take them as statistics but when it is here at home, it makes headline news. I think I wrote about something like this awhile back as well but it’s just so disturbing that unless something happens directly to us that we don’t even think about it. I guess that’s just human nature. Here in the United States we take so many things for granted, happiness being one of them especially considering the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States were based on these statements:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.The pursuit of happiness. What does that mean for people these days? Maybe not what is most disturbing that we can’t find happiness is that we place it in the hands of others. We attach ourselves through Love and while I am not saying that this is a necessity and part of life to find people that you can share your life with through relationship and friendship, it is disturbing that we cannot pursue happiness ourselves. As long as we live in our little bubbles and do not realize that we are all part of such a larger picture and that we can’t find ourselves or our feelings in others, we will forever be chained to our intrigue of destruction and death.
